Hyperton-X, the unique Hypertonic Muscle Release Technique

Hyperton-X (HT-X) / Sports Kinesiology
developed by Frank Mahony, introduced and re-written by Trevor Savage ND, has been included to form the now more holistic Neural Organization Therapy as it relates to neurology and muscle physiology.

The Frank Mahony Method of Hypertonic Muscle Release is simple and yet one of the most powerful tools you can have to release muscle tension, strengthen weak and painful muscles, to increase flexibility and sports performance. It is used by professional athletic trainers, coaches, physiotherapists, kinesiologists, massage therapists, naturopaths, chiropractors and osteopaths.

Frank Mahony (deceased) focused on the "hypertonic muscle state" after being introduced to the Sacro Occipital Technique (S.O.T.), a Chiropractic method developed by Dr De Jarnette with the help of Doctors Duarte, Simmons, and Buddingh. Mahony gained an understanding of S.O.T. and the effect it has on Cerebro-Spinal Fluid (CSF) through studies with Dr Curtis Buddingh DC. He then developed a method of detecting and correcting hypertonic muscles that were related to the Sacrum and the Occiput, which results in a profound and often immediate effect on mental and physical performance. Thus Hyperton-X was born!!

Dr Kay McCarroll DC, an Australian now living in the UK, noted great success in keeping athletes at peak performance in competition in the grueling 'Six Day Ultra Marathon' in August 1984, and the 'London to Paris Triathlon' in September 1985. Long distance runner, Malcolm Campbell, gives great credit to McCarroll and Hyperton-X for keeping him fit in the Ultra Marathon, and at age 52, finished second in a race across the United States in 1985.

German therapist, specializing in Learning Difficulties, gives Hyperton-X a major share of the credit in correcting one case diagnosed as Schizophrenia.

During the two years from 1982 to 1984, Frank worked with many of the competing US Olympic Track and Field athletes trying out for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.  One special athlete was Rene Felton, a Champion Californian State Junior 100 metres Hurdler, who Frank worked with for these two years.  Rene was only 16 years old at the time of the selection Trials and had just resumed training for 3 weeks after having had her 6th abdominal operation for Crohns Disease.  She missed selection by 1/100 second! Frank continued to treat her with Hyperton-X Muscle Balancing and in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games she not only was chosen to represent her country of the USA but she broke the World Record and won Gold for America.  What an achievement.

Recently Rene Felton (now Besorene) contacted me from her home in Italy.  She is now a Physiotherapist consulting to the Italian Olympic Team.
Rene invited us to travel to Italy to teach a workshop for the Italian Olympic Team. She is very busy training her son who is a World Champion Runner.  He recently competed in The World Championships in Athletics in Osaka Japan.  I am sure he is benefiting now from Frank’s original work that we still teach today.  Maybe Hyperton-X is not the new kid off the block but it is grounded in solid neurophysiology which is a part of standard physiotherapy.  Experiencing a session will change your life. Rene has now developed her own version called Aqua-Hyperton-X which she says is astounding all the Olympic officials.

What is Hyperton-X "Hypertonic Muscle Balancing”?

Hyperton-X is a Kinesiology Method - Muscle Testing, which tests for and corrects imbalanced muscles. By “clearing” these hypertonic muscles, the person becomes more flexible and relaxed and able to use their body in an integrated way, giving improved power and flexibility to their chosen activities.

What else is Hypertonic Muscle Balancing used for?

Techniques are also used for Pain and Emotional Stress Release, as well as to enhance physical and mental performance levels, both for learning and sports activities, preparing for pregnancy and childbirth and working with the learning disabled.

Frank Mahony believed that muscles that had become "Hypertonic" through injury or over-use were responsible for a lot of the imbalances that occur in the Posture, Nervous System, Cerebro-Spinal Fluid flow and Meridian Energy flow.

What are the benefits of Hypertonic Muscle Balancing?

Hypertonic Muscle Correction has been shown to have the following beneficial effects:-

  • increase in Neuro-Muscular communication;
  • re-sets the proprioception mechanisms in the muscle spindles and tendon reflexes that may have been shocked due to injury or over-use;
  • improves circulation in both Vascular and Lymphatic systems;
  • releases inhibiting signals (interference) from the muscle that may cause a jamming effect in the sensory co-ordination areas of the brain - specifically the Common Integration Area (CIA) in the Logic Brain Cortex;
  • improves co-ordination through better muscle balance and enhanced cross-lateral stimulation in the Brain;
  • releases restricted muscles that effect Posture and improves normal flow of Cerebro-Spinal Fluid. (note: No Spinal adjustments are used)
